Well, we've landed on the island of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands and our beach vacation has begun! We have rented a house on the southwestern side of the island on the Silly Creek peninsula. The island is not very large; you can drive the length of it in less than 45 minutes and that's with a speed limit of 40mph. They speak English and use American currency so it is very easy to get along here. However, they do drive on the left hand side of the road. Brannon has been adjusting nicely to driving, so I think I'll just let him chauffeur us around all week.
Food is very expensive here, so I am glad we have a kitchen where I can prepare most of our meals. We ate lunch yesterday at a casual restaurant and for four adults and three kids it cost $140. We just had fish tacos, burgers, fish sticks, grilled cheese sandwich - nothing fancy. The iced teas were $3, the kids meals (drinks not included) were $10 and it went up from there. The view was incredible though - we were right on the beach so the kids went to play in the sand while we waited for our food. After paying the bill, we decided that we should stock up on groceries for the rest of the week. Brannon and I went on a date to the IGA Super Grocery Store yesterday afternoon while William and Shirley watched the kids. It was very romantic. ;-) Just to give you and idea of the cost of food on an island, here's a few prices:
Gallon of milk $8
Three chicken breast halves $10
Sandwich meat $11 a pound
Ground beef $4.50 a pound
Green peppers $2.09 a pound
Tomatoes $2.19 a pound
But with a view like this from our back porch, I'm not really complaining! :-)
